FAIRFAX, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team finished the first day of competition with a combined score of 579 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Monday.

The Cougar contingent ended the first two rounds in 16th place and head into the final day of play at the par-71, 6,686-yard Meadow Club.

The Cougar men ended the first round of competition with a total score of 292 and finished the day with a second round total of 287. The team was led by senior Jordan Mason with his even-par score of 142.

Freshman Xavier Dailly and sophomore Kevin Tucker finished the day with a score of 146 (+4) and are the second best Cougar scorers going into the final round of competition.

Freshman Nick Ellis carded a two-round total of 148 while sophomore Austin Hurt finished close behind with a total score of 150 to round out the Cougar scorers.

"The men seem to be playing better but they are still making a few little mistakes," head coach Walt Williams said. "In this good field there are some phenomenal scores so we are just not able to get over that hump. They are a young team but they are working hard and trying to get better."

The men hope to move up the leaderboard tomorrow as the final round of competition begins at 7:20 a.m.
