SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington State University runner Andrew Jones finished third overall in the men's invitational to help the men's cross country team to a second place finish out of eight teams. The women finished eighth and were led by Lisa Egami.

Jones, a Gillette, Wyo. senior, finished the 8,000 m race in 24:02 behind runners from Washington and Eastern Washington. Four other Cougar runners finished in the top-20 Saturday. Chris Williams came in 10th with a time of 24:24, Chris Concha was 16th at 24:34, Sam Ahlbeck crossed the line a second later to place 18th, and Dominic Smargiassi clocked in at 24:39 for 20th place.

Freshman David Hickerson finished 21st, just outside the top-20, with a time of 24:40

"The men ran really well," head coach Jason Drake said. "We were without four of our top runners, but the men have some great depth."

Washington won the men's team title with a score of 31, and Washington State finished second with 52 points.

The Cougar women finished eighth, in an eight team field, with 180 points on the 6,000m course. Host Washington was the top women's team with 27.

WSU's Lisa Egami (Coquitlam, British Columbia) finished 26th with a time of 22:10 as the top finisher for the women's team. Freshmen Amanda Andrews, 32 and Ashlee Wall, 34, Becky Williams, 60th, Jessica Crannell 66th, and Anna Layman 67th, rounded out the Cougar finishers.

"Lisa Egami ran 20 seconds faster than a year ago," said Drake. "I was really pleased with freshmen Amanda Andrews and Ashlee Wall."

Top runners from both the men's and women's teams sat out in an effort to reduce their total races for the season, Coach Drake said.

The Washington State cross country teams' next competition takes place September 29 at the Roy Griak Invitaional in Minneapolis, Minn.
