WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - For the second time this season and the fourth in his career, Washington State University men's basketball's Klay Thompson has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 6-12, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday. The junior guard helped lead the Cougars to wins over Gonzaga and Texas-Pan American last week.

The Ladera Ranch, Calif., native scored 24 points in the 81-59 win over Gonzaga Wednesday (Dec. 8). After just three points in the first half, Thompson took over after halftime, scoring 21 points while shooting 7-for-10 from the field. He finished 8-for-14 from the field and 4-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc with six assists, one block and a career-high seven steals. Thompson led the Cougars in scoring, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals on the night.

Thompson added 15 points and four assists in WSU's 74-52 win over Texas-Pan American at Spokane Dec. 10. The back-to-back 20-plus wins are the first of the season and the first since wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacramento State Nov. 18 and Nov. 21, 2008. For the week, he averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds.

Thompson moved into 16th on WSU's all-time scoring list and now has 1,189 points, as he passed Vince Hanson, Kyle Weaver and Terry Ball on the week.

This is the fourth honor for Thompson who becomes the first Cougar to earn a Player of the Week honor more than twice in his career. Last year he became the first Cougar to earn the honors in back-to-back weeks as he was Pac-10 Player of the Week Nov. 23 and Nov. 30. Four WSU student-athletes have earned the honor twice in their careers, Joe Wallace, Bennie Seltzer, Mark Hendrickson and Daven Harmeling. It is also the second time Thompson has earned the honor twice in the same season. It marks Washington State's 23rd all-time Player of the Week.

The Cougars begin a 14-day road trip as they head to Santa Clara, Sunday, Dec. 19 to face the Broncos for a 7 p.m. tipoff. After that WSU heads straight to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic.
