KNOXVILLE, Tenn - The Washington State women's rowing team captured victories in two of three races during a dual regatta against Tennessee Saturday morning on Fort Lake Loudon at Knoxville. The start of the regatta was moved up an hour to 9 a.m. in order to avoid inclement weather conditions.

The Cougars captured victories in the second varsity eight and varsity four races despite battling strong crosshead winds. WSU fell to Tennessee in the first race of the morning, the varsity eight race.

"Things went well for the second varsity eight and varsity four crews," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "We had a minor equipment issue that had a slight affect on the outcome but we still do have a few things to work on with the varsity eight crew. We'll just have to get back to the drawing board and work some things out."

In the morning's most exciting racing action, the Cougars captured a narrow victory over the Lady Vols in the second varsity eight race. The race was close throughout with the two crews being tied at the 500-meter mark, before the Cougars took a slim lead at the 1000-meter mark. WSU finished the race narrowly defeating Tennessee in the event, with a time of 7:14.08 to the Lady Vols' mark of 7:15.42.

In fours action, the WSU varsity four squad captured its sixth victory of the season. The Cougar crew took an early lead in the race that the Lady Vols could not overcome. WSU prevailed in the race finishing with a time of 8:09.00. The UT "A" squad finished second with a mark of 8:16.00 while the UT "B" crew completed the 2000-meter course with a time of 8:30.60.

WSU's varsity eight crew, ranked 17th for the second consecutive week in the US Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll, fell in its' racing action to No. 13 Tennessee. The Cougars earned a mark of 7:28.10 but it was not enough as they fell to the Lady Vols', who finished the course with a time of 7:19.90.

The Cougars will resume racing action Saturday, May 7 when they travel to Seattle to race in the Opening Day Regatta on the Montlake Cut.
