MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - The Washington State rowers, ranked 12th nationally in the latest US Rowing/CRCA Coaches Poll, came within 30/100s second of sweeping Gonzaga in dual competition with near perfect conditions on Silver Lake at Medical Lake, Washington, Saturday morning. The Cougars claimed wins in five of the six races.
WSU won the varsity eight, both second varsity eight, the varsity four, and the second varsity four races. The lone race captured by Gonzaga was the novice eight where the Bulldogs needed computer enhancement of the video to review the finish and determine the GU boat narrowly edged the Cougars with a winning time of 7-minutes, 25.44 seconds to WSU's time of 7:25.74.
"It was really great to get on the water and start the racing season," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "The weather was good and the team performed well. I'm looking forward to opening Pac-10 competition next weekend."
In the varsity eight and the varsity four races, WSU won handily by 17 seconds, and the second varsity eight race was a victory for crimson and gray by 15 seconds.
Washington State will head to California for the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay April 2 and 3, where the Cougars will race against Stanford, California, USC, Washington, UCLA, Oregon State, Wisconsin, San Diego, Oklahoma, Purdue and Iowa. Last season WSU had three top-four finishes in San Diego, including a victory in the novice eight race.
