LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Led by freshman Nick Ellis' dominant second round performance, the Washington State University men's golf team sits in 13th place at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, Monday.

After two rounds of play, the Cougars are only five strokes from cracking the top 10 at the par-71, 7,078-yard New Mexico State Golf Course. Shooting 295 in the first round of competition and improving with a score of 289 in the second, the Cougar squad combined for a total of 584.

Ellis fired a 3-under par 68 in the second round to finish the day at even par and tied for 19th. With a total score of 142, Ellis is only two strokes from the top 10 heading into the final day of competition.

Sophomore Kevin Tucker also sits in the top 25 after day one as he carded a 1-over 143. Tucker led the Cougars after his even par first round performance and currently sits in a tie for 24th.

Freshman Xavier Dailly also fared well in the first day of competition shooting a combined score of 150. Sophomores Austin Hurt and Nick Grigsby were not far behind as they carded a 151 to round out the Cougar contingent.

The Cougars look to continue their scoring improvement as the final day of competition begins at 8 a.m., Tuesday.
