Top Cross Country Competition Awaits Cougars at Pre-Nationals

THIS WEEK: The Cougars will send a team of cross country runners to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-Nationals meet Saturday, while a second group will travel to Cheney, Wash., to compete in the EWU Invitational.

THE PRE-NATIONALS: The meet takes place on the rolling and challenging LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind...both the men's and women's races will be divided into two seeded heats determined by the NCAA Cross Country Sub-Committee...the Blue and White heat races will have the top-ranked programs divided equally among them to ensure top competition in each race...the Washington State women's team will be among 87 teams competing in the event with 23 of the top 30 teams in the country represented, including Pac-10 rivals Stanford (No. 1), Arizona State (No. 7) and UCLA (No. 25)...the Cougar men will face a field of 86 teams populated with 26 of the top 30 teams in the nation, including Pac-10 competition Stanford (No. 2), Arizona State (No. 15), Oregon (No. 25) and Washington (No. 29)...the women's 6,000m heats are slated to begin at 11 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. EST with the men's 8,000m heats to follow at 12:10 p.m. and 12:50 p.m. EST...for more information, visit www.indstate.edu.

THE EWU INVITATIONAL: The Eastern Washington Invitational is a small format regional meet drawing teams from Washington, Idaho, and Oregon...squads from Gonzaga, Idaho, Portland State and Montana are expected to compete...the event takes place on the grass athletic fields at the university with the women's 5,000m race beginning at 11 a.m. and the men's 8,000m race scheduled for 11:30 a.m....additional information can be found at the EWU website, www.goeags.com.

WSU WOMEN: A squad of eight runners will represent Washington State at the Pre-Nationals meet led by redshirt senior Ana Cabrera and senior Molly Bull...sophomores Natalie Smith and Katie Troy will also make the trek to Indiana along with Kayle Peterson who looks to better last year's 124th place finish...freshmen Haley Paul, Collier Lawrence and Isley Gonzalez round out the team running in their first Pre-Nationals meet...a smaller contingent of runners head to Cheney, Wash., for the EWU Invitational led by senior Julia Corbett...sophomores Grace Coulter and Karen DeMartini, along with freshmen Michelle DeCourcey and Eileen Morley will also compete for the Cougars.

WSU MEN: Head Coach Jason Drake sends his top runners to Terre Haute led by the senior tandem of Mike Heidt and Danny Wolf, WSU's top finishers at last year's meet...sophomores Matt Knoff, Andrew Jones and Alex Grant make their second appearance at a Pre-Nationals meet for the Cougars and are joined by redshirt sophomore Ryan Freimuth and redshirt freshmen Chris Concha and Daniel Frederick...also running this weekend, redshirt junior Jonathan Manthey and redshirt freshman Geoff Casazza travel to Cheney, Wash., for the EWU Invitational.

LAST YEAR AT THE PRE-NATIONALS: The men ran to 16th place finish out of 35 teams in the Gold race held at the Irv Warren Gold Course at Waterloo, Iowa...Mike Heidt and Danny Wolf paced the Cougars finishing 70th and 78th respectively...in the women's Purple race, the Cougars finished 21st among 32 teams led by Ana Cabrera's 77th place finish.

NEXT COMPETITION: WSU will have a week off before traveling to Berkeley, Calif., to compete in the Pac-10 Championships Oct. 30.
