LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Washington State's (2-1-1) Alix Rustrum and Cailan McCutchan both scored as the Cougars beat New Mexico (3-2-0) 2-0 Friday, in the first game of the Loyola Marymount/Holiday Inn LAX Tournament at Los Angeles, Calif.
Cougar goalkeeper Katie Hultin made two saves to record her third shutout of the season. Hultin has yet to surrender a goal this fall in 335 minutes in net.
Rustrum, WSU's leading scorer put away the game winning goal at the 41:02 mark, heading in a Carmen Anderson cross. The junior forward led the Cougars with four shots, two on goal.
McCutchan gave WSU the 2-0 lead heading in a Christie Spear free kick in the 85th minute. The Maple Valley, Wash. native's goal was her second this season.
WSU out shot the Lobos 12-6, recording nine shots in the second half and posted three corner kick opportunities compared to UNM's one. Other Cougars who recorded shots were junior Haley Miller and freshmen Kim Bonnes and Molly Alexander.
Washington State will play Northern Colorado Sunday, at 11 a.m. at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles, Calif. for its final game of the tournament.
