PULLMAN - The Cougar defense stole the spotlight in Washington State's final scrimmage of spring football Saturday at Martin Stadium, holding the offense to 231 yards on 51 plays.

The Cougar running game was the story of the first scrimmage, but today was held to 69 yards on 22 carries, an average of 3.1 yards per rush. Redshirt sophomore Logwone Mitz led WSU running backs with 34 yards on six carries, including the longest rush of the day, a 21-yard gain.

Cougar quarterbacks combined to complete 17-of-29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt senior Kevin Lopina saw a majority of the action as WSU's signal caller, going 11-for-17 for 80 yards. Redshirt sophomore Dan Wagner completed 6-of-12 for 82 yards, and hit redshirt freshman tight end Andrei Lintz for a 38-yard touchdown, the only score on the day for the Cougar offense.

Redshirt junior wide receivers Jeffrey Solomon and Anthony Houston each caught a team-high three passes, with Houston gaining 27 yards and Solomon racking up 12 yards. Lintz had a team-high 38 yards on his touchdown reception from Wagner.

Redshirt senior defensive end Kevin Kooyman and junior defensive end Casey Hamlett each recorded sacks for the Cougar defense, and redshirt sophomore Aire Justin had an interception.

The Cougars open the 2009 season against Stanford, Sept. 5 at Martin Stadium.
