SPOKANE, Wash. - What's Happening This Week: The Cougar women's rowing squad begins its fall rowing season against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the Spokane River, Saturday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. The varsity squad returns 24 athletes from last spring's squad that finished tied for second in the Pac-10 in team point standing. Head Coach Tammy Crawford considers the team quite young with only two seniors on the squad, and expects them to be very eager and competitive. The team also welcomes a new head coach as Vita Scaglione was hired as Novice Head Coach in August.

What Happened Last Year: In last fall's Head of the Spokane, the varsity women excelled in each of their races, posting the top two times of 17:29 and 18:04 in the varsity eight race and clocking a 19:17 and 20:12 to take the top two spots in the varsity four event. WSU also posted a time of 19:52 in a varsity pair race that went unopposed. The novice rowers took five out of the top six spots in their race, including the top four with winning times of 19:25, 20:08, 20:15, and 20:19.

WSU Coach Tammy Crawford on facing Gonzaga: "I have a lot of respect for Coach (Glenn) Putyrae and the team he is developing at GU. Although their squad is smaller, and receives less funding than ours, they have a quality training site, it's close to campus, and their athletes are dedicated and talented. I believe our depth is greater, but we have certainly battled some windy conditions in the past two weeks. Our team needs to prepare for a challenge and push ourselves out on a limb physically. In a three mile race, especially with a staggered start, the responsibility will be on the Cougars personal commitment and self-accountability to push themselves."

Coach of the Year: The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) selected varsity head coach Tammy Crawford as the West Region Coach of the Year May 23rd. Crawford fulfilled the criteria for the award based on team success during the season, team improvement from the prior season, harnessing the team's potential, and demonstrating a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.

Scaglione Takes the Helm: The coaching staff welcome aboard a new face to take to the water. Vita Scaglione joined the Cougars as head coach of the women's novice team. Scaglione fills the void left by the retirement of longtime novice head coach, Jodi Winchell. Scaglione arrives to the Palouse after serving as assistant coach for the University of Michigan women's rowing novice squad for the past two years. Scaglione coached for two years at Michigan's Nike Rowing Camp, and spent one summer as an assistant coach at the U.S. Rowing Development Camp. Scaglione, who earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Michigan in 1999, was a three-year member of the Wolverine women's varsity rowing team, including one year as a captain. In 1999, she achieved third place in the NCAA National Championships as a rower in the second varsity boat

Coaching Tenure: Tammy Crawford enters her 17th season as collegiate coach, and her 12th season as head coach of the varsity women's rowing program at Washington State University. Michelle Argenbright begins her fourth year as an assistant coach for the Varsity squad, and Vita Scaglione makes her debut as Novice Head Coach this season.
