PORTLAND, Oregon -- First baseman Casey Kelley was 4-for-8 with two home runs on the day as the Washington State (16-14, 6-4) baseball team defeated Portland State (11-20, 1-10) 6-3, 8-5 in a doubleheader Saturday at Civic Stadium.

Kelley blasted a home run in each game and now has a Pac-10 North leading 14 homers. Kelley was 1-for-4 in the first game and 3-for-4 in the nightcap. He also added a triple and six RBI. Kelley entered the PSU series tied for 20th in the nation in home runs and is now only 10 homers away from breaking John Olerud's school record of 23. Ray Hattenburg started both games in left field and faired well with a 4-for-7 day, including two doubles, a triple, and three RBI.

Todd Meldahl (4-3) started the first game and pitched his second consecutive complete game to pick up the victory. Meldahl gave up only three runs and seven Viking hits while striking out seven.

In the nightcap Cougar ace Wade Parrish (5-2) bounced back from his loss at Washington and was impressive in his five and a third innings of work. Parrish gave up four runs, all of which came in the sixth inning, and seven hits. Reggie Rivard entered in the sixth and put a stop to a four-run PSU rally. Rivard gave up only one run off two PSU hits in the final three and two-thirds innings to pick up his second save of the season.

Portland State's Rick Southall continued his hot hitting and contributed a 3-for-7 day with two doubles. PSU starter Josh Pearce (1-5) took the loss in the first game giving up four runs in just over five innings of work. Tony Blackhurst went to the mound in the nine inning game and didn't fare much better, giving up six runs in four and two-thirds innings.

The Cougs played catch-up in the first game that saw them down 2-1 before entering the sixth inning. In the sixth WSU exploded for five runs to put the game out of reach and secure the 6-3 victory. Kelley hit a three-run blast that proved to be the game winner and Hattenburg added a two-run double to close out the scoring in the sixth.

The nightcap saw a pitcher's duel between Parrish and Blackhurst for the first three innings. Both teams were held scoreless before the Cougs scored four runs in the top of the fourth. Hattenburg pushed across two runs with a two-out double and catcher Ryan Smith scored two more with his fifth double of the year. Kelley provided two more runs in the fifth with his second homer of the day. The home run over the left field wall gave Washington State a 6-0 lead.

The Vikings rallied in the bottom of the sixth to pull within two, but Rivard entered and shut down the PSU lineup. The Vikings recorded only two hits off of Rivard who has now only given up one run in his last eight and two-thirds innings of relief. The Cougar defense continues to improve and for the second straight day they did not commit and error.

The Cougars are now just a game and a half out of first place in the Pac-10 North behind OSU and UW. Oregon State remains in first place after splitting a doubleheader with No. 15 Washington. Dave Wheeler (1-2) will get the start in Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale. Portland State had scheduled Adam Flohr (4-5) to get the start, but Flohr pitched the final three innings of Friday's opening game.
