PULLMAN, Wash. -- - The Washington State Cougars open the 2006 football season against one of the best football teams in the nation, facing the Auburn Tigers in a game literally made for television, WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk announced today.

Auburn, 13-0 last year, will host the game Sept. 2, with ESPN on hand to telecast the game nationally.

"ESPN approached both schools with the idea of kicking off the regular season with this intersectional contest and first-ever meeting between the two schools," said Sterk.

The Idaho Vandals and Baylor Bears complete Washington State's non-conference schedule next fall. WSU hosts Idaho Sept. 9 and Baylor a week later, Sept. 16. The Cougars will return the game at Baylor in 2008.

The Cougars host five Pac-10 games in 2006 and four the following season. Next year USC, California, Oregon, Arizona and Washington will play at Martin Stadium, while the Cougars go on the road for league contests at Stanford, Oregon State, UCLA and Arizona State.

Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville's Tigers finished undefeated and ranked second in the final 2004 polls behind national champion Southern California.

Washington State will be the fourth team from the Pacific-10 Conference Auburn has played. They have won two of three games with Arizona (the last in 1972), their only meeting with Oregon State (1973), but have lost two of three against USC, including the last meeting in 2003.

Sterk also announced the new 2007 schedule following approval by the Pacific-10 Conference. Starting in 2006, NCAA Div. I teams may play a 12-game schedule, not counting playoffs and post-season bowl games. The Pac-10 recently gave tentative approval to schedules for the next two seasons after re-drawing the entire league format.
