PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University soccer team controlled the run of play throughout the game on its way to a 4-0 win over Idaho in an exhibition match at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.

The Cougars, which set a school record for fewest goals allowed in a season at 15 a year ago, picked up where they left off defensively and added some offense to the mix against the Vandals.

"I'm really encouraged by the energy level of the team," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We mixed and matched players and we created a lot of opportunities in front of the goal and some good finishes. I'm excited about where we're at. It was another step in the right direction."

Senior Brooke Bemis scored a pair of goals for the Cougars while sophomore Kiersten Dallstream and freshman Emma Stolz each tallied once for Washington State.

The Cougars outshot Idaho 24-9 and WSU goalkeepers were only required to make one save in the match. Bemis scored first at the 5:54 mark when she found a rebound of a Mallory Fox shot and slipped it past Vandal goalkeeper Anna Sandman.

Washington State increased its lead to 2-0 when Dallstream beat Sandman 1-one-1 at the 14:22 mark. The Cougars outshot Idaho 14-5 in the first half and held the two-goal advantage at halftime.

Stolz pushed the WSU to 3-0 at 51:42 when she beat Idaho goalkeeper Michelle Jordan after a feed from redshirt-junior Shaye Harrel. Bemis nearly found the net for her second goal in the 58th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar.

Instead, Bemis's second goal came at 77:13 when she pounced on a loose ball in front of the Vandals' net and beat Caylee Ketchum, Idaho's third goalkeeper of the night. Again, it was Fox who picked up the assist after her shot was saved but not controlled.

The Cougars open their regular season at Montana Friday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. Pacific.
