SEATTLE, Wash. - Brittney Hawks recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the Washington State women's basketball team's 98-64 loss to the Washington Huskies at Bank of America Arena, Friday night.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 2-9 and 0-1 in the Pacific-10 Conference. Washington improved to 6-4 and 1-0 in the conference.
Hawks' performance against the Huskies was the fifth consecutive and 10th career double-double posted by the senior from Rexburg, Idaho.
Andrea Lalum led a contingent of five Huskies that scored in double figures with 22 points. Loree Payne (17 points), Emily Autrey (13 points), Giuliana Mendiola (11 points) and Kellie O'Neill (11 points) completed the quintet.
The Cougars stayed within four points of the Huskies throughout the first part of the first half and trailed by a 24-20 margin at the 9:23 mark. At that point, the Huskies proceeded to go on an 11-2 run over the next 3:29 to open up a 35-22 advantage with 5:54 remaining in the half.
The Cougars reduced the Huskies' lead back to single digits at 35-27 at the 5:07 mark courtesy of a Hawks' bucket and a McCurtain trey. Washington extended its lead back to double figures as the team closed the half with a 10-5 run to take a 45-32 lead into the break.
The Cougars managed to pull to within 49-39 on a Lindsey Egeland three-pointer at the 17:53 mark of the second half. However, the Huskies erased any doubt of the game's outcome by going on an 18-2 run over a 4:38 span to take a 67-41 lead with 13:45 remaining.
WSU returns to action, Friday, Dec. 28 at Oregon State. Tip-off is slated for 7:05 p.m.
