EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Washington State women's rowing team was not as successful as they had hoped to be racing in their furthest regular season competition against Michigan State and Clemson on Lake Ovid, Mich., with only the Novice eight coming away with a win.

Coming off a weekend of rest, the WSU Novice crew beat both Michigan State and Clemson and crossed the finish line in a time of 7:35.2. Clemson finished second in 7:38.36 followed by MSU A in 7:38.73 and MSU B in 8:05.83.

The Spartan Varsity eight crew, who jumped nine spots to No. 9 in the latest USRowing and CRCA Poll, beat No. 16 Washington State by five seconds and finished first with a time of seven minutes, 11.13 seconds. The Cougars placed second, ahead of unranked Clemson in 7:16.07.

"Overall the Varsity eight rowed solid and I'm happy with their performance against a fast Michigan State team," said Cougar head coach Tammy Crawford. "They rowed aggressively which is something they didn't do last weekend against Wisconsin. We addressed the things we wanted to, but haven't been able to really pull it all together yet."

Michigan State also claimed victories in the Second Varsity eight and Varsity four races. WSU took second in the Second Varsity eight in 7:37.51 and third in the Varsity four with a time of 8:17.35.

In a regatta on Long Lake in Spokane, Saturday, a WSU Novice crew took second place in a Novice four competition that featured Gonzaga and UC-San Diego.

The Cougs next travel to Belmont, Calif., to participate in the Stanford Invitational April 29 and 30. Racing is set to start at 8 a.m. and run until 2 p.m.
