Jason Gesser has jumped into second on WSU's career total offense list and fourth on the career passing list...he now needs 421 yards in total offense to pass WSU record holder Jack Thompson, having moved past Ryan Leaf, Drew Bledsoe and Timm Rosenbach in recent weeks...he needs 800 passing yards to move past Thompson and become the all-time WSU passing leader...Gesser already has won more games as a starter than any other Cougar quarterback, 19...he also holds WSU records with touchdown passes in 18 consecutive games and with multiple TD passes in 17 games, bettering by one records held by Ryan Leaf. (For details see Gesser page)

DUNNING EARNS HONOR: Drew Dunning was named the Pacific-10 Conference Special Teams POW after hitting field goals of 48, 35 and 35 yards against USC last Saturday...his first 35-yarder tied the game with 1:50 to play and his second 35-yarder gave WSU the overtime win, its first extra period victory since 1997.

2002 CAPTAINS: WSU - QB Jason Gesser (17), CB Marcus Trufant (45), RS Curtis Nettles (18). STANFORD - The Cardinal select game captains each week.

WSU DEFENSE HALTS LONG RUSHES: In the last 10 years WSU has allowed just 110 runs of 20 yards or longer in 109 games...this year in six games the Cougars have allowed seven runs of 20 or more yards and 22 runs of 10-19 yards.

COUGS AGAINST RANKED TEAMS SINCE 1995: WSU is 7-17 against ranked teams since 1995...when WSU has also been ranked, the Cougars are 2-5.

COUGS SCORE OFTEN: Since 1980 WSU has averaged more than three touchdowns a game, currently boasting an average of 25.9 points per outing, including 35.0 points per game this year.

NOTHING LIKE HOME: The Washington State Cougars perform much better at home than on the road during Mike Price's 14 year tenure...at home the Cougars are 43-31 (58.1%) and on the road the team is 35-45 (43.8%)...WSU's 6-0 home record in 1997 is the best ever for the Cougars, while the 2001 record of 6-1 is the best on the road since the 1988 team also went 6-1.

RUSHING TOTALS UNDER 100: In the last 10 years WSU has held 45 of 109 opponents to less than 100 yards rushing...the lows include Montana State's -35 and Pacific's -6 in 1993 and Montana's -6 in 1995...in those 109 games, WSU held opponents to 50 or less yards 13 times.

100-YARD RUSHERS FEW: Only 41 running backs have been able to crack the 100-yard mark in the last 10 years and 109 games against WSU's defense...UCLA's Skip Hicks and Reuben Droughns from Oregon are the only backs to have done so in back-to-back seasons.

COUGS BOAST STARTING EXPERIENCE: WSU fields an experienced team in 2002, with 38 players having started at least one game...collectively they made 424 career starts...the Cougar defense boasts 179 career starts by 16 players, including 91 by six linemen, 25 by five linebackers, and 63 by four defensive backs...on offense nine linemen made 124 starts, six receivers made 56 starts, and four backfield players had 41 starts, a total of 220.

RED ZONE: WSU has scored 19 times in 28 trips into the Red Zone, 16 touchdowns and three field goals...the failures have been two missed field goals, two lost fumbles, an interception, three on downs and one end of half...opponents have scored 13 touchdowns and two field goals in 20 Red Zone appearances and failed three times by interceptions, missed one field goal and failed on downs once.

MIKE PRICE NOTES: WSU head coach Mike Price, the dean of Pac-10 coaches, will serve as head coach at this year's East-West Shrine Game January 11...Price is the second winningest coach in WSU history...his 77 wins and 78-76 record at WSU is second only to Babe Hollingberry, who was 93-53 in 17 years as WSU's head coach (1926-42).

TURNOVERS: WSU is even in turnovers for 2002...the Cougs have turned the ball over 10 times (six fumbles, four interceptions) and taken the ball away 10 times (two fumbles, eight interceptions)...WSU didn't have a turnover against MSU, the Cougs' first no-turnover game since playing Oregon last season.

WSU IN PAC-10 RANKINGS: The Cougs currently rank second in passing offense, total offense and punt returns and third in passing efficiency...Jason David is tied for the interception lead, while Kyle Basler is second in punting, David second in passes defended and Devard Darling second in touchdown scoring...Jason Gesser is third in total offense and fourth in both passing yards and passing efficiency.

WSU IN NCAA RANKINGS: WSU is eighth in passing offense, 13th in total offense and 14th in passing efficiency...Jason Gesser ranks 19th in passing efficiency and 22nd in total offense...Kyle Basler is 21st in punting and Jason David is 22nd in interceptions...Marcus Trufant is ranked 32nd in punt returns, Drew Dunning 40th in field goals and Devard Darling 33rd in receptions, 49th in scoring and 52nd in reception yards.

NINE COUGS BOAST 20+ STARTS: Nine of WSU's top 22 players have started 20 or more games in their career, headed by Derrick Roche with 32...three of his teammates on the line are also on the list...Tyler Hunt has 27 starts, Josh Parrish 23 and Phil Locker 22...Marcus Trufant has the most starts among the Cougar defenders and is second to Roche with 31...Fred Shavies has made 29 starts for the Cougar defense...quarterback Jason Gesser has started 28 games, while receiver Collin Henderson has 27 starts.

SCOTT LUNDE DOING HIS PART: Scott Lunde, a redshirt junior wide receiver who wasn't listed on the depth chart at the start of fall camp, is now WSU's third leading receiver...he has caught 22 passes in WSU's first six games for 245 yards...Lunde hails from Vancouver, Wash., and Hudson's Bay High...last week Lunde was awarded a scholarship from head coach Mike Price.

COUGS 15-3 IN LAST TWO SEASONS: Since the start of the 2001 season, WSU has won 15 of 18 games...it is the best record for an 18-game stretch since the 1929-30 season when WSU went 17-1...WSU is tied for fifth among D-I teams the past two years: Miami 17-0, Oregon 16-1, Oklahoma 16-2, Texas 16-2, Tennessee 15-3, WSU 15-3.

GREEN ROMPS 75 YARDS: Jermaine Green ran 75 yards for a score against USC, the fifth longest run by a Cougar in Martin Stadium and the longest since DeJuan Gilmore went 79 yards against Boise State in 1998...it is also the longest run from scrimmage for WSU in conference game since Tali Ena went 80 yards against Oregon in 1979.

WINS AGAINST CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS: The last four times WSU won three games against Pac-10 foes from California, they went to a bowl game, 1988, 1994, 1997 and 2001...WSU is 2-0 this year against California opponents.

NEWCOMERS SCORE FOR WSU: The Cougars have scored 27 touchdowns this season, 24 offensively and three defensively...17 of those touchdowns have been scored by first-year players...on offense Devard Darling has scored eight TD's, Jonathan Smith five and Jermain Green four...redshirt freshman Will Derting has one of WSU's two defensive touchdowns.

SUCCESS ON THE ROAD: Washington State has won five of its last six road games in Pac-10 action...WSU closed out the end of the 2000 season with a win at USC...last year the Cougars defeated Arizona, Stanford and ASU on the road before a loss at Washington, while this year WSU opened the Pac-10 season with a win at Cal.

TRUFANT GRABS NINTH INTERCEPTION: Marcus Trufant intercepted one pass against Idaho to give him nine career thefts...he is now tied for eighth with Greg Burns...one more would break the tie (no one else has 10) and two more picks would tie him for sixth with Don Paul and Torey Hunter...Trufant grabbed two interceptions his freshman year (1999), made three more picks as a sophomore, then had three last season...he has returned his nine interceptions 106 yards.

TRUFANT THIRD ON PUNT RETURN LIST: Marcus Trufant returned four punts 110 yards against Montana State earlier this season, including returns of 52 and 47 yards...only two players have returned punts for more yards in a game than Trufant...Shawn Tims, in 1997 against USL, returned five punts 167 yards...in 1983 Kitrick Taylor returned six punts for 113 yards against Oregon...Trufant has also moved into seventh on the single season list with 237 punt return yards this season.

DAVIS MOVES UP DEPTH CHART: There's a new linebacker moving up the WSU depth chart and his name is Davis...this Davis is Mawuli, a walk-on and transfer from New Mexico State...he prepped at Skyline High in Oakland and spent three years at NMSU before joining the Cougars last year...he has 34 tackles and 2.5 TFLs in six games...Davis was on scholarship for three years at NMSU, redshirting his first season before playing and starting several games in his second and third seasons with the Aggies...changes in the football program prompted Davis to look for another school.

SCORING STREAKS: WSU currently has three significant scoring streaks on the line:

  • The Cougars have scored in 206 consecutive Pacific-10 games, the longest active streak for any league team...the last time WSU was shut out in Pac-10 play was at Oregon State in 1975;

  • WSU has scored in 207 consecutive games since a 44-0 shutout at Ohio State in 1984...the streak is the fifth longest among D-I schools.

  • The Cougars have scored in 171 consecutive Martin Stadium home games since a 21-0 loss to Oregon State in Pullman in 1956.

HENDERSON THE BEST QB?: Collin Henderson has completed all 10 passes in his four-year career for an amazing five touchdowns and 433 yards...that's a QB rating of 628.72...he completed one as a freshman in 1999 for 24 yards and a TD...in 2000 he was 4-for-4 for 154 yards and two scores...in 2001 he threw three passes for 71(td)-62(td)-63 yards...this year he is 2-for-2 for 59 yards.

SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED: Three members of WSU's football team have earned scholarships since fall camp began...they are punter Kyle Basler, a redshirt freshman from Elma, Wash., Scott Lunde, a redshirt junior from Vancouver, Wash., and linebacker Mawuli Davis, a redshirt senior from Oakland, Calif...all were walk-ons.
