SPOKANE, Wash. - Washington State University's women's rowing team continued the fall season with a victory Saturday at the Head of the Spokane Regatta.
WSU and Gonzaga split its varsity eight squads into two varsity four boats for stronger competition. In the varsity four race, WSU's "C" boat took first at 19:25, and WSU's "A" squad grabbed second at 19:26. Gonzaga followed with third and fourth place finishes, and the WSU "B" boat took fifth at 19:51, ahead of Calgary's time of 20:26.
"The crews did a good job, improving over last week's competition," said Head Coach Tammy Crawford. "I would like to do more small boat competition and the athletes seem to enjoy it."
The WSU "A" boat captured first place in the varsity two race at 20:06, ahead of Gonzaga's time of 20:42. WSU's "B" squad finished third at 20:27.
The novice eight "A" boat took second place at 18:26, behind Gonzaga's 17:57. The "B" squad fnished fourth at 19:37, with Gonzaga's "B" taking third at 19:28.
In the varsity eight race, WSU raced its own junior varsity squad, and beat them 18:08 to 18:23.
The Cougars will return to the water Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Head of the Lake at Seattle, Wash.
