What's Happening This Week: The Washington State women's rowing team will compete for the first time this spring Saturday, March 24, taking on Gonzaga...races start at 9:30 a.m. on Silver Lake at Medical Lake, near Spokane.

Race for the Fawley Cup: WSU and Gonzaga's varsity eight boats are set for the 17th annual race for the Fawley Cup...Cougars have won the cup in 15 of its 16 years... Bulldogs only win came in 1997.

WSU Head Rowing Coach Jane LaRiviere on facing Gonzaga: "We are really looking forward to just racing. There has been a lot of training. We haven't raced since whenever the Head of the Charles was. And Gonzaga looks like they are pretty quick. They have had some good results, good early season results."

Second Half Showdown: WSU raced Gonzaga twice in the fall...second varsity eight finished with a time of 17:25, beating the Bulldogs' varsity eight by eight seconds Oct. 21 in Spokane...both varsity eight and second varsity eight crossed the finish line before the Gonzaga varsity eight Oct. 28 in the Head of the Snake at Wawawai Landing... race was shortened due to weather, from 6,000 meters to less than 2,000.

Cougars in the National Spotlight: WSU's varsity eight is ranked eighth in the nation in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/U.S. Rowing 2007 preseason poll...places the crew one spot higher than last year's preseason poll...WSU is one of six Pacific-10 Conference teams ranked in the top-20.

Last Time Out: WSU final scheduled regatta Nov. 12, 2006, the Head of the Lake, was cancelled due to weather...Cougars last outing was against the Bulldogs, in the shortened Head of the Snake Oct. 28...varsity eight and second varsity eight outstroked Gonzaga, but high winds hampered the race.
