SPOKANE, Wash. - Washington State University's women's rowing team opened the fall season with a victory Saturday at Gonzaga.
In the varsity eight race, WSU captured first place by 28 seconds, rowing a time of 17:09 to Gonzaga's 17:37. The junior varsity placed third at 17:41, with the third varsity eight and Gonzaga's junior varsity eight rounding out fourth and fifth respectively.
The composite eight race followed suit, with the WSU (B) boat winning by a margin of 41 seconds at 17:57. The WSU (A) boat rowed to a second place victory at 18:23, and Gonzaga finished third with a time of 18:38.
A closer race ensued for the varsity four, with the WSU (A) boat taking first by only two seconds at 20:04 over Gonzaga's 20:06. The WSU (B) squad ended in third at 20:33, and Montana in fourth at 20:35.
The novice eight (B) boat placed second at 20:24 behind the 19:10 finish of the (A) boat of Gonzaga. WSU's novice eight (A) squad rowed to a fifth place finish at 20:54, and the (C) group finished in sixth at 21:05.
The Cougars will return to the water Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Head of Spokane.
