CLEMSON, S.C. - Washington State women's rowing team entered Sunday in the Clemson Classic at Clemson, S.C. a long way from Pullman, but they will come back satisfied.
WSU's second varsity eight boat captured first place at 6:41.6, defeating Duke, Clemson, and Tennessee. The Cougar No. 14 ranked varsity eight boat nearly eclipsed Oregon State for first place, crossing the line a mere 1.1 seconds out of the top spot.
"Despite the narrow loss, I am satisfied with the result and how we handled the last 1000 meters of the varsity eight race," said Head Coach Tammy Crawford. "We are also happy with the changes we made with the junior varsity eight boat and the difference was clear in their first big race of the season."
The Cougar varsity four finished in third behind Clemson and Duke at 7:29.5 in the varsity four race.
Cougar women's rowing will next compete Saturday, May 4, in the Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut near Seattle.
