CLEMSON, S.C. – The Washington State University women’s rowing team faced challenging conditions in the first session of the Clemson Invite at Lake Hartwell Saturday morning. The second session, originally scheduled for Saturday evening, was postponed.

Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said, “We are looking forward to a condensed schedule tomorrow. Hopefully we will get all the racing in.”

A 20 mph crosswind posed a challenge to the rolling start on the 2000-meter course Saturday morning. The No. 12 Washington State varsity eight (bow – Isabella Watt, Kendall Boliba, Mickey Aylard, Nicole Hare, Mollie McCabe, Jordan Watson, Morgan Cathrea, Elise Jones, coxswain – Sarah Wu) kicked off regatta with a second place finish in 7:06.6. Indiana, ranked 20th nationally, took the win and finished eight tenths of a second ahead of the Cougars (7:05.8).

In the second varsity eight, the Cougar women (bow - Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Kayla Wakulich, Carter Marks, Megan McDonald, Kerry Hassall, Noel Christiansen, Emily Starkel, Ieva Adomaviciute, coxswain – Emily Boquet) grabbed third place and finished the 2,000-meter course with a time of 7:32.1. The No. 14 Harvard squad won the race and finished less than three seconds ahead of WSU (7:28.2). Indiana narrowly took second and beat WSU by three tenths of a second (7:31.8).

Racing third for the Cougars, the varsity four (bow – Kim Coon, Hannah deVos, Alex Waddell, Savannah Davison, coxswain – Rebecca Burns) took fourth in its race. The women clocked a time of 8:36.0 and finished behind No. 15 Wisconsin (8:19.5), Syracuse (8:27.1), tied for 18th nationally, and No. 14 Harvard (8:28.7).

In the final race of the session, WSU’s third varsity eight took sixth in 8:07.5. Harvard’s third varsity eight boat won the race in 7:37.6.

The second session of the Clemson Invite will begin at 4:45 a.m. PT Sunday. The third session’s is scheduled for 6:23 a.m. PT.
