SEATTLE, Wash. - The opening day of boating season was not a day to celebrate for the Washington State women's rowing team. WSU's Varsity four finished third, eight seconds behind a pair of Husky boats Saturday at the Opening Day Regatta on the Montlake Cut. The Washington "A" squad took first in 7:25.01, while the UW "B" boat followed in 7:30.22.

"That's a little disappointing," said WSU head coach Tammy Crawford. "I thought we would be a little closer to them (Washington), but we were coming out of finals and there are a lot of distractions at that event with 100,000 people out on their boats. It will be interesting to see what happens at the Pac-10 championships."

The Cougars took third in a time of 7:33.74. Seattle Pacific finished fourth at 7:35.50, while Seattle U. rounded out the field at 7:57.47.

All the Cougars' eight-seat boats took this week off to concentrate on finals. The entire 16th-ranked WSU squad will be back in action May 14 at the Pac-10 championships in Sacramento, Calif.
