LAKE NATOMA, CALIF. - The Washington State rowing team will wait in anticipation until Tuesday to learn whether or not the team will receive an invitation to the NCAA Championship. The Cougars placed third at the Pacific-10 Championship, Sunday with 59 team points, falling only to Stanford (61) and Pacific-10 Conference Champion California (79).

After successful heat races Sunday morning, all four WSU boats advanced to the grand finals guaranteeing each boat at least a sixth place finish.

The varsity eight finished the course at Lake Natoma with a time of 6:44.7 earning a third place finish in the grand final and adding 32 points to the Cougars' team score. First place California finished with a time of 6:38.8 leaving the competition for second place a rat race between WSU and Stanford. The Cardinal barely edged out the Cougars, finishing just two seconds ahead of WSU.

The novice eight also finished third in its grand final behind California and Washington, contributing eight points to the team score. California took first in the race finishing with a time of 7:14.2. Second place Washington crossed the finish line seven seconds later (7:21.9), less than two seconds ahead of the WSU novice eight (7:23.2).

The second varsity eight posted a fifth place finish in its grand final. With 1000 meters left to race, the Cougars fell into the sixth place slot behind USC, but the boat found its second heat and outstroked the Trojans by one second, finishing the course with a time of 6:58.5.

"The results might not reflect it, but the second varsity eight had a great weekend," head coach Jane LaRiviere said.

The varsity four completed the course with a time of 7:53.2 earning a fourth place finish. The Cougars defeated Oregon State and Gonzaga and finished behind Washington, California and USC.

"The novice eight and varsity four got us started this weekend," LaRiviere said. "Both crews did a great job. The varsity eight worked really hard to achieve the third place finish and we really need that."

Last year at the Pac-10 Championship, Washington State placed seventh. The varsity eight missed the grand final by just over three and a half seconds and WSU finished the event with a total of 38 team points.

WSU last received an invite to the NCAA Championship in 2006 after placing second at the Pacific-10 Championship. The Cougars went on to place fourth at the National Championships. If the Cougars are selected to compete at the NCAA Championships they will return to Lake Natoma for the three day event, Friday, May 30 through June, 1.

The Washington State men's rowing team also competed Sunday posting a sixth place finish.
