Terre Haute, Ind. - The Washington State women's team finished 17th in the White section race and the Cougar men finished 20th in the Blue section race at the NCAA Pre-National Cross Country Meet Saturday, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at Terre Haute, Ind.

Cougar sophomore Haley Paul (Phoenix, Ariz.) had an outstanding day, finishing the 6,000m women's White race in 23rd place with a time of 20-minutes, 47 seconds.

"Haley Paul had a good day and finished right about where she did a year ago, so we are excited about that," Head Coach Jason Drake said. "This is a phenomenal field so it's a great job by Haley."

Also scoring for the women's team were freshman Chelsea VanDeBrake in 99th place (21:43), juniors Collier Lawrence (103rd, 21:45) and Isley Gonzalez (105th, 21:46) and senior Kelly Ramirez (115th, 21:52). Sophomore Meghan Leonard (133rd) and redshirt freshman Sara Trané (155th) also competed for the Cougar women. The team placed 17th out of 37 teams in the women's White race.

"All the women ran great so it was definitely a good day," Drake said. "This was the best finish for the women at Pre-Nationals in a while."

Sophomore Woody Favinger was the top Cougar finisher in the men's Blue race, placing 44th overall with a time of 24:25 on the 8,000 meter course. Juniors Andrew Jones (85th, 24:47), Alex Grant (86th, 24:47), Chris Williams (123rd, 24:59) and sophomore Drew Polley (194th, 25:36) all scored for WSU. The men finished 20th overall in the Blue section field of 36 teams. Chris Concha and Dan Geib also ran for the Cougars.

"Woody Favinger was the Cougar of the day as he moved up nicely throughout the race," Drake said. "Alex Grant, Chris Williams and Andrew Jones all had good days as well."

The Pre-Nationals featured 72 men's teams and 73 women's teams, divided into two seeded heats determined by the NCAA Cross Country Sub-Committee. The Blue and White heat races had the top-ranked programs divided equally among them to ensure top competition in each race.

Colorado won the men's team title in the Blue race with Martin Fagan of Providence (23:30) taking the individual title. Josh McDougal of Liberty (23:14) won the men's White race, with Iona capturing the team title.

Stanford won the women's Blue race while Wake Forest's Michelle Sikes (20:16) took the individual win. North Carolina State won the women's White race as Julia Lucas was the individual winner (20:01), leading her team to victory.

The Cougars will use the next two weeks to train for the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Oct. 28, at Palo-Alto, Calif.
