THIS WEEK: The Washington State cross country teams travel to Missoula, Mont., to defend their victories in the Montana Invitational hosted by the University of Montana.
THE MONTANA INVITATIONAL: WSU men's team will face Montana, Montana State, Idaho State, Eastern Washington, MSU-Billings, Great Falls, Blackfoot Community College and the Big Sky Distance Project club team...WSU women will compete against Montana, Montana State, Idaho State, Eastern Washington, MSU-Billings and Great Falls...event takes place on the University Golf Course and features a trail comprised of grassy rolling hills and a short section of dirt path...men's 8k race is scheduled for 10 a.m. (MT) with the women's 6k race to follow at 10:45 a.m. (MT).
WSU WOMEN: The Washington State women will send a team of 13 runners to the event led by last year's winner Haley Paul...Meghan Leonard, Kelly Ramirez, Collier Lawrence and Isley Gonzalez comprise the rest of the Cougar top five.
WSU MEN: The Cougar men will be represented by a contingent of ten runners...junior Andrew Jones and sophomore Drew Polley are coming off strong finishes at the Sundodger Invite...also running are Evan Blanshan, Chris Concha, Woody Favinger, Daniel Geib, Alex Grant, Clay Hemlock, Dominic Smargiassi and Chris Williams.
LAST YEAR: Both the men's and women's teams were victorious last year in Missoula...the men bring back five runners who placed in the top 20...for the women, six runners return who placed in the top 20.
COUGAR OUTLOOK FOR THIS WEEKEND: "We are probably the favorite on both the men's and women's side but overall, it's nice to compare where we were a year ago," Head Coach Jason Drake said. "This is a good opportunity to compete against a few schools where we can get together and run as a team. It is also a good tune up for us to move into the Pre-Nationals a couple of weeks away."
REGIONAL RANKINGS: In the Sept. 25, 2006 USTFCCCA Division I West Region polls the men's team ranks ninth and the women's team ranks sixth.
NEXT COMPETITION: The Cougar harriers have a week off before a limited squad travels to Pre-Nationals at Terre Haute, Ind., Oct. 14...WSU will also send a second squad to Cheney, Wash., that same day to compete in the EWU Invitational.
