MISSOULA, Mont. - The Washington State University men's and women's cross country teams were both victorious at the Montana Invitational held Saturday at the University of Montana golf course.
Both squads easily won to overcome a field of eight teams on the men's side and six teams on the women's side.
For the women, WSU junior Haley Paul raced to her first win of the season, covering the 6,000 meter course in 21-minutes, 32 seconds. Also placing in the top ten were Isley Gonzalez, third, Chelsea VanDeBrake, eighth and Collier Lawrence, 10th. Kelly Ramirez finished 14th and rounded out the Cougar scorers.
"Haley continued to look good and impressive and easily won over a Montana runner," Head Coach Jason Drake said. "Isley Gonzalez had a great day and had a breakthrough for her with her third place finish."
The Washington State men were led by team captain Alex Grant, who placed first with a time of 25:05 on the 8,000 meter course.
Woody Favinger ran a solid first race of the season, finishing in third place. Freshman Dan Geib had another strong performance finishing fifth. Juniors Chris Williams and Andrew Jones rounded out the Cougar top five and also placed in the top ten overall.
"Both Alex Grant and Woody Favinger, coming into their first races of the season, was a very nice job from them," Drake said. "I was pleased with their performance. Dan Geib stepped up nice and Chris Williams and Andrew Jones ran solid. Williams and Jones looked much better than a year ago so I was excited about that."
The Cougars will have a week off in preparation for the Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind., and the EWU Invitational in Cheney, Wash., Saturday, Oct. 14.
