CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington State Cougars had the hits, but they didn't have enough to beat Oregon State ace Mark Newell, who struck out 12 as the Beavers downed visiting WSU 9-6 Friday at Coleman Field in the Pacific-10 Conference North baseball opener for both clubs.
The Cougars (2-24) out hit Oregon State 12-11 and did not commit an error, but couldn't rally off Newell in the late innings. Scott Randall, Ray Hattenburg, Steve Curran and Casey Kelley were able to solve Newell's pitching to the tune of all but one Cougar hit. The bottom portion of WSU's battling lineup collected just one hit off the Oregon State right hander who is now a perfect 6-0.
The Beavers (17-6-1) scored early to build up a 5-0 lead. In the first inning Cougar starter Wade Parrish (0-3) walked two and hit one Beaver batter to load the bases. Ryan Lipe then collected his only hit of the game, a timely single to center that sent two runs home.
Jason Stranberg's sacrifice fly in the second scored another OSU run and in the third Ben Bertrand belted a lead off home run, his fifth of the year, to give the home club a 4-0 lead. In the fourth Tyson Vermillion also collected his only hit of the afternoon, a single that scored Scott Skeen for a 5-0 Beaver lead.
WSU then took advantage of a pair of Oregon State errors and three timely hits to score four runs in the fifth. Ray Hattenburg had an infield single with the bases loaded to score one WSU run. After Steve Curran's single to right field plated another Cougar run, Kelley doubled home two more runs, pulling the Cougars to within a single run, 5-4.
The Beavers then answered WSU's wakeup call by scoring four times to build up another five run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mike Leone's single off Parrish scored the first OSU run of the inning, while Matt Bailie's two-run double off relief pitcher Nick Pappas accounted for two more Beaver scores.
With the bases loaded, WSU's third pitcher, Marcus Glaze, hit Vermillion with a pitch to force home OSU's final run. That also was about the only mistake Glaze made. The Cougar sophomore who had not allowed an earned run in eight innings this year, shut down the Beavers the rest of the way, allowing just one hit. He walked one and struck out two.
Washington State made a run at OSU in the sixth, scoring two more runs off Newell, both earned. With one out Curtis Robinson, the only Cougar batter in the bottom half of the lineup to get a hit, singled to left field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later Scott Randall doubled home Robinson and then Randall scored on Ray Hattenburg's single to right field.
Newell then regained his form and shut down WSU over the final three innings, allowing just two baserunners, singles by Kelley and Hattenburg.
WSU and OSU continue their four-game weekend series Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
