Chambers And Keller Claim Cougar Victories

November 20, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. - Cougars Gretchen Chambers and Katie Keller kept the Washington State women's swim team in tow despite a 138-66 loss to rival Washington at Gibb Pool on the eve of Apple Cup.

Chambers finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.53 seconds. This marked a season best time for the junior from Adelaide, Australia. She accomplished a 1:55.96 in last week's meet against San Jose State.

Keller edged out Washington's Jaina McClure, a sophomore transfer from Minnesota, in the 50 freestyle with a 24.05. The senior from Seattle, Wash. tied a season best time in the event.

Junior Erin Eldridge (Kirkland, Wash.) had to fight it out with Washington's Rae Abbott in the 200 breaststroke event. Abbott's first place time of 2:17.25 and Eldridge's second place time of 2:17.61 surpassed an NCAA consideration time standard (2:18.32). It also erased a Gibb Pool record of 2:20.57 set by Eldridge earlier this year. Both are ranked among the nation's top 15 in the event.

In team competition, UW and WSU's top relay teams surpassed a previous Gibb Pool record of 3:53.97 in the 400 medley relay. The UW team comprised of McClure, Abbott, Kristen Nagata, and Addy Elsner finished first with a 3:49.31 and the WSU team of Anna Hohmann, Eldridge, Sarah Ewan, and Keller finished second with a 3:52.65.

"We had a great meet and a lot of people stepped up," WSU assistant coach Alicia Hicken said. "We are dropping our times and I am confident we can still beat them at Pac-10's where it is a whole different meet."

The Cougars are now 3-4 on the season and will once again meet the Huskies Dec. 3-6 for the Husky Invitational at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash.
