SENIOR (1998-99): Indoor - Torn tendon on throwing hand (between finger and palm) forced medical redshirt season...surgery repaired tendon and rehabilitation successful...

JUNIOR (1997-98): Indoor - Career-best of 19.34m/63-5 1/2i in shot put came in fourth-place finish at NCAA Indoor Championships (3/14/98, Indianapolis)...repeated as All-American...finished third in shot put and 11th in 35# weight throw at MPSF...Outdoor - Placed third in discus and fifth in shot put at NCAA Outdoor Championships...popped career-best of 19.45m/63-9 3/4 in shot put at Pelluer Invite in Cheney (4/24/98)...threw lifetime-best discus of 64.44m/211-5 for second place at the 19th Annual Hartnell Throwers Meet in Salinas, Calif. (5/19/98)...discus mark was the best this year among NCAA Division I men...Waltz surpassed Jon van Reenen's WSU discus record of 63.66m / 208-10, set in Pullman in 1970...went on to finish second in discus and third in shot put at Pac-10 Championships...at USA Outdoor Championships in New Orleans, placed 8th in discus with toss of 59.98m/196-9, and 16th in shot put with distance of 18.08m/59-4...

SOPHOMORE (1996-97): Indoor - Threw four personal-bests and three NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the shot put...won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation meet at 18.43m/60-5 3/4i (2/21/97, Reno)...also threw discus pr of 56.66m/185-11i at McDonald's I (2/1/97, Moscow)...Outdoor - Claimed nine shot put victories and seven discus wins...finished eighth in shot and second in discus at Penn Relays...saved best for last...double-winner at Pac-10 Championships (5/24-25/97, Seattle) with NCAA automatic qualifying marks in the shot put (18.80m/61-8 1/4) and discus (59.84m/196-4)...discus mark is second-best and shot distance is fifth-best in school history...earned All-American honors in both events at NCAA...threw discus 58.16m/190-10 (6/6/97, Bloomington) for eighth place...heaved shot 18.50m/60-8 1/2 for eighth (6/7/97, Bloomington)...named team field MVP...

FRESHMAN (1995-96): Indoor - Heaved a Pac-10 outdoor qualifying 17.25m/56-7 1/4i shot put at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships (2/24/96, Reno)...did same in discus with 54.88m/180-1i throw, only 20 1/2 inches less that John van Reenen's 1967 frosh record...Outdoor - Finished second in discus at Pac-10 Championships with throw of 57.56m/188-10...personal-best effort was a 57.78m/189-7 heave for third place at the Penn Relays (4/27/96, Philadelphia) - top WSU freshman mark and fifth-best in school history...provisional NCAA mark...personal-best mark in shot put was 17.60m/57-9 for second place at the 1996 USA Junior National Championships in Delaware, Ohio...at IAAF World Junior Championships in August in Australia, finished fifth in discus (53.16m/174-5) and sixth in the shot put.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Earned four track letters at Post Falls High School for coach Dan Nipp...also garnered three letters as a fullback/defensive end in football...as a FRESHMAN threw shot 45-5 and discus 118...first year on varsity football finds this SOPHOMORE the team MVP...also voted most inspirational for track...finished second in state discus...at Jr. Olympics placed third in shot put (52-1) and fourth in discus (157-4)...during his JUNIOR year voted Male Track Athlete of the Year...state champion in the shot at 58-6 1/2...second in state discus (159)...received SENIOR football all-region honors...also MVP on defense...track awards included MVP and most inspirational...top-ranked discus All-American at 203-9...eighth in nation in shot put at 63-0...won both events for prep team at state meet...selected Gatorade Idaho Athlete of the Year...state record-holder in discus.
