WSU Sets Five Thorpe Track Records at EWU Early Bird Open

January 16, 1999

CHENEY, Wash. -- The Washington State University women set four Thorpe Fieldhouse records and had two NCAA provisional qualifying performances while the Cougar men broke one facility mark at the indoor track and field opening event, the Eastern Washington University Early Bird Open.

The Cougar women had several impressive performances highlighted by redshirt junior Francesca Green Sewell's two wins. Sewell (Kennewick) led a WSU first-through-fourth finish as she blazed to victory in the 60m dash with a record time of 7.69i. Sewell also won the long jump with a leap of 5.70m/18-8 1/2i as four Cougar teammates followed in long jump placing. Freshman Ellannee Richardson (Gladstone, Ore.) led a first-through-fifth-place WSU sweep in the 60m hurdles with a Thorpe Fieldhouse record time of 8.81i.

Sophomore transfer Jeannette Martus (Livonia, Mich.) set a new Thorpe Fieldhouse and WSU school record with her NCAA provisional qualifying pole vault win at 3.50m/11-5 3/4i. Another newcomer, freshman Whitney Evans (Calgary, Canada), also achieved an NCAA PQ mark with her 1.77m/5-9 3/4i leap to win the high jump.

WSU's Becky Potter, a redshirt sophomore thrower from Gig Harbor, won the 20# weight throw with a heave of 15.92m/52-2 3/4i and broke teammate Andrea Thornton's record distance of 50-2 3/4i set last year. Thornton finished third in Saturday's weight throw at 15.75m/51-8 1/4i.

For the WSU men, sophomore Arend Watkins (San Jose, Calif.) won the 60m hurdles in a Thorpe Fieldhouse record time of 7.94i. Kevin Moore (senior, Richland) claimed victory and B.J. Schade (redshirt junior, Sequim) was second in the 35# weight throw with marks of 17.96m/58-11 1/4i and 17.09m/56-1i, respectively. Spokane junior Craig Allen won the high jump at 1.90m/6-2 3/4i and senior Kyllan Tower (Auburn) won the pole vault at 4.90m/16-0 3/4i.

Idaho's Joachim Olson won the shot put at 17.77m/58-3 3/4i while Tim Gehring was second (unattached, 16.95m/55-7 1/2i), and WSU's Ian Waltz (senior, Post Falls, Id.) finished third at 16.86m/55-3 3/4i.

The next indoor action for the WSU track and field teams is Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Silver State Invitational in Reno, Nev., and also at the Jerry Martin Invitational back at EWU's Thorpe Fieldhouse, Cheney.
