Cougar Track & Field Squads Sweep Washington

Women cruise to 107-47 victory; men squeak by 86-77.

SEATTLE, Wash. - Francesca Green Sewell won three events Saturday at the Washington State women crushed Washington in dual meet competition in Seattle, 107-47. The Husky men defeated the Cougars 86-77.

Sewell, a redshirt junior from Kennewick, Wash., captured the 100m dash (11.86), long jump (19-6 3/4) and the triple jump (40-5, PR) and placed second in the high jump (5-7) in the Cougar women's resounding win.

WSU swept the women's 100m, 200m, high jump, triple jump and hammer as the Cougs won 13 of the 18 events contested.

Mandy Borschowa (freshman, Snoqualmie) bettered her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the discus with the winning throw of 174-10, which also improves her WSU freshman record and is the third-farthest throw in WSU women's history.

Andrea Thornton (sophomore, Shelton) won this week's version of WSU musical chairs in the hammer throw, heaving a school-record 174-1. Becky Potter (RS-sophomore, Gig Harbor) took second with a career-best of 171-6 while previous school record-holder Molly Moore (senior, Kalispell, Mont.) was third at 168-11.

WSU's Jeannette Martus (sophomore, Livonia, Mich.) won the pole vault (11-11 3/4) but Whitney Evans (freshman, Calgary, Canada) took fifth with a WSU freshman record height of 10-6. Evans won the high jump at 5-8 3/4.

Other Cougar women claiming victory were: LaTroya Mucker (junior, Los Angeles) in the 200m (23.97), Sharika Higgins (junior, Oxnard, Calif.) in the 400m (54.81), Alishia Booterbaugh (junior, La Center) in the 800m (2:10.96), and Ellannee Richardson (freshman, Gladstone, Ore.) in the 100m hurdles (13.92).

For the Cougar men, Bernard Lagat (senior, Kenya) won both the 800m (1:49.46) and the 1500m (3:51.90) and Demetrius Murray (junior, Tacoma) won both the long jump (23-9) and the triple jump (51-3 3/4).

Chris Charles (senior, Bainbridge Island) won the men's steeplechase in career-best and Pac-10 qualifying time of 9:04.21.

WSU won both hurdles races with Arend Watkins (sophomore, San Jose, Calif.) taking the 110m hurdles (14.03) and freshman Eric Dudley (Bellingham) winning the 400m hurdles (52.63).

Other Cougar men taking first Saturday included Chris Rushing (junior, Redmond) in the high jump (6-8 3/4), Lex Katich (junior, Keller) in the pole vault (16-0 3/4), and B.J. Schade (RS-junior, Sequim) in the hammer (200-8).

Washington thrower Ben Lindsey and sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker each won two events. Lindsey threw an NCAA PQ of 60-4 1/2 in wining the shot put. Husky javelin thrower Justin St. Clair improved his NCAA PQ with a heave of 231-3. UW's women had two NCAA PQ efforts - Anna Aoki won the women's 3,000m race (9:36.86) and Keisha Griffis claimed the 400m hurdles in 58.05.

The Cougars return to Pullman to host the Cougar Invitational Meet, April 23-23, featuring top prep and area collegiate competitors at Mooberry Track.
