Cougars Fall To Santa Clara 9-2 In First Road Match

September 4, 1998

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Mandy Clemens scored three goals while Rachel Weber and Jacqui Little added a pair each as the No. 2 Broncos of Santa Clara handed Washington State a tough 9-2 defeat at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Santa Clara's (2-0-0) first goal by Weber came in the fourth minute and the Cougars (1-1-0) tied the game in the sixth minute when senior Kim Schelpf (Ocean, N.J.) split the Bronco defense with a score assisted by senior Lynsey Coffey (Santa Rosa, Calif.).

The Broncos went on to score five more goals in the first half and three in the second half.

The Cougars' second goal came in the 85th minute off a diving header by sophomore Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) from a corner kick by freshman Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.).

"Everyone is disappointed with the result but we've got to move on," said head coach Dan Tobias. "The key for us is how we respond to this. We had a good result in the opener and we were dealing early on with success. Now we have to deal with the loss."

WSU will continue their northern California road trip Sunday with a match against University of the Pacific at noon.
