Stanford Drops Cougars 1-0 In Sudden Death Overtime

October 30, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. - Stanford forward Kelly Adamson scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Cardinal defeated the Washington State women's soccer squad 1-0 at the Cougar Soccer Field Friday afternoon.

The win marked the third straight time the Cardinal have beaten the Cougars 1-0 in overtime, moving Stanford to 8-6-2 overall and 2-4-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference. The loss drops WSU to 5-9-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the Pac-10.

Adamson broke the scoreless tie in the 99th minute, after dribbling from the center line through the Cougar defensive half. Adamson then beat two defenders and nailed a shot past goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) in the lower right corner of the goal.

Jorgensen made eight saves, many that kept the Cougars in a scoreless tie. Stanford had 20 shots on goal, with 12 different players contributing to the total. The Cougar offense was quiet with only seven shots.

"Up to the point when they scored the goal, we had played over 210 minutes of shutout soccer but you can't continue to do that. If you don't have the numbers attacking you're not going to score goals," said WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias. "We're not utilizing our strengths."

The Cougars hope to rebound when they host California (10-7-0 overall, 4-2-0 Pacific-10) Sunday at 11 a.m. Washington handed the Golden Bears a 1-0 loss in Seattle Friday.
