Cougars Drop Oregon State In Double Overtime 2-1

October 16, 1998

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore forward Deka DeWitt scored the game-winning goal with three minutes left in double overtime to give the Washington State women's soccer squad a 2-1 victory over Oregon State Friday in Corvallis.

The Cougars (4-7-2 overall, 2-1-0 Pacific-10), who earned their first win on the road this season, had 22 shots on goal. The Beavers (5-6-1 overall, 0-2-0) lost their second straight match versus Pacific-10 Conference competition.

DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.), WSU and Pac-10 leading scorer, nailed a shot from 18 yards past Beaver goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease to give the Cougars the victory. Senior co-captain Amy Chippendale (Kearny, N.J.), who has seen limited playing time due to recovering from knee surgery last spring, had her first assist this season on the game-winner in overtime.

DeWitt also assisted the Cougar's first goal with a cross to freshman Natalie Kehl (Colbert, Wash.) who scored to tie the match at one in the 60th minute. Dewitt had nine shots on goal to lead the Cougar attack and has scored 11 goals this season. Senior Kim Schelpf (Ocean, N.J.) added five shots on goal while junior co-captain Christina Pallan (Las Vegas, Nev.) had three.

The Beavers' lone goal came in the 38th minute when Lindy Brown knocked a scoring header from five yards past Cougar goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.).

The Cougars look to continue their winning ways Sunday when they face Oregon at Pape Field in Eugene at 1:00 p.m. The match will be shown by Fox Sports Northwest on a tape-delayed basis Monday, Oct. 19 at 2:00 p.m.
