Cougars Lose First Home Match, Fall To Minnesota 4-2

September 21, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's soccer squad lost its first home match of the season, falling to defending Big Ten Champion Minnesota 4-2 Monday at the Cougar Soccer Field.

Minnesota (5-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Alison Rackley scored on an assist by Nicole Lee. The Cougars (2-3-2) tied the game at one in the 50th minute when freshman Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) touched an indirect kick outside the box to junior Christina Pallan (Las Vegas, Nev.) who launched a shot over goalkeeper Dana Larson.

Corinne Bolder scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute with an assist from Rackley, and the Gophers extended their lead to 3-1 when Lee scored in the 70th minute. The Cougars closed the gap when sophomore Deka Dewitt (Auburn, Wash.) nailed a penalty shot past a diving Larson.

Minnesota dashed any hopes of a WSU comeback when Lee scored her second goal of the game with an assist from Bolder to seal the 4-2 Gopher victory in the 89th minute.

"We didn't consistently stick to the game plan," said WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias. "The things we've been doing in the past that offensively have allowed us to get into a good rhythm and defensively win the ball back in our opponents' half of the field, we didn't do those things very well today. That's the reason we weren't able to posses the ball very much and the reason we didn't have much success today."

The Cougars will make their final road trip in September when they travel to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason and George Washington this weekend.
