Montana Sinks Cougars In Overtime 3-2

October 4, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. - Reserve forward Heather Olson nailed her fourth game-winning goal of the season seven minutes into the first overtime period to give visiting Montana a 3-2 victory over Washington State Sunday afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Field.

Sara Overgaag, who scored the first goal for the Grizzlies (7-3-1 overall) 37 seconds into the match, sent a cross along the left end line that Olson knocked inside the near post. Olson, a freshman, tops Montana with six goals this fall.

"That was a typical Montana goal," said Betsy Duerksen, Montana's head coach. "We got the ball to the end line and Sara served it in. Heather has been clutch for us."

The Cougars (2-6-2 overall) forced the overtime when sophomore Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash./Auburn) scored her second goal of the match with just three minutes remaining in regulation. DeWitt picked up a loose ball and blasted a shot from 30 yards for her Pacific-10 Conference leading 10th goal of the season.

But Montana regrouped and controlled the overtime period holding the ball in WSU's end of the field.

"We seem to have the same theme of defensive compactness," said WSU head coach Dan Tobias. "We play the ball out of the back, but don't get support to get it clear."

The Cougars open Pac-10 play at home against USC Friday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 11 when they meet defending league champion UCLA.
