Cougars Lose Tough 2-1 Battle With Arizona State

October 23, 1998

TEMPE, Ariz. - Behind a pair of goals by freshman midfielder Stacey Tullock, the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the Washington State women's soccer squad 2-1 Friday night.

The Cougars (5-8-2 overall, 3-2-0 Pacific-10) jumped out to an early lead in the fourth minute of play when junior Meagin Donovan (Noblesville, Ind.) knocked a corner kick from freshman Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) into the upper-left corner of the goal past ASU goalkeeper Erin Reinke.

Arizona State (7-7-0 overall, 3-1-0 Pacific-10) tied the match with nine minutes left in the first half on the first of Tullock's two goals. In the 61st minute, freshman Lindsey Millspaugh (Kent, Wash.) was awarded a red card for a hand ball deterring a Sun Devil scoring opportunity, resulting in a penalty kick score for the game-winner by Tullock. Millspaugh was ejected, leaving the Cougars with only 10 players for the remainder of the game.

With just two minutes left in regulation, the Cougars had an opportunity to tie the match when freshman Natalie Kehl (Colbert, Wash.) sent a through pass to senior Kim Schelpf (Ocean, N.J.) who went one-on-one with the keeper Reinke. Reinke deflected the first shot but Schelpf nailed the rebound wide.

"We played well in the first ten minutes of the game and the last 10 minutes, but during the remaining 70 minutes we weren't even close to playing up to our capabilities," said WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias. "I was proud of the way we battled with only 10 players."

The Cougars will continue their Southwest road swing as they face Arizona Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
