LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 61 Washington State Cougar tennis team captured its only victory in No. 4 singles as they were defeated, 6-1, by the USC Trojans Friday in Los Angeles.

Junior Chris Martinez shined for the Cougars as she knocked off her opponent, Matias, in No. 4 singles by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. The victory marks Martinez's first in her last five matches and win number 13 on the season.

Washington State (5-13, 1-5 Pac-10) faced four ranked opponents coming in No. 1 doubles and the first three singles positions.

Martinez/Orsolya Sallai posted only two points in their 8-2 loss to No. 16 Luana Magnani/Carine Vermeulen. At No. 2 doubles Cougars Lorena Arias/Zsofia Fodor also fell by a score of 8-2 to their opponents Anca Anastasiu/Dianne Matias. The Cougar tandem of Nora Gaal/Amy Toth hit the court together for the first time in almost a month, but lost to Judy DeVera/Bernadette Bayani, 8-4.

Arias came close to an upset against No. 15 Magnani in No. 1 singles, but ended up losing the tie-breaker in the last set. The score was 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. No. 54 Vermeulen was too much for Sallai as the Trojan won, 6-0, 6-2. Gaal played a great first set despite losing it and went on to lost the match, 7-5, 6-1, to No. 95 Anastasiu.

Freshmen Toth and Nelly Dvornicka rounded out the Cougar six in singles and both could not find success against their opponents. Toth was handled in straight sets by DeVera, 6-2, 6-1 and Dvornicka was put down 6-1, 6-2 by Bayani.

"Credit USC they have a lot of depth in their line-up," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We will work to capture the doubles point tomorrow against UCLA and gain more confidence going into singles."

The Cougars have faced ranked competition in 16 of their 18 dual matches this season and they will continue with their tough schedule as they square-off against No. 7 UCLA, Saturday beginning at noon.
