PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State cornerback Jason David is among 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation's best college defensive back, the Jim Thorpe Association announced Wednesday.

David, a senior from Covina, Calif., has intercepted five passes this season and knocked down 10 others. David returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns and has also forced a fumble.

"I'm honored to represent Washington State as a semifinalist for this award and I think it says a lot about our secondary. It could have been any of us," David said. "I play with a great group of guys back there and I definitely wouldn't be in this situation without guys like Erik Coleman and Virgil Williams."

David has picked off 15 passes in his career, which is good for second on WSU's career list behind Tennessee Titan safety Lamont Thompson with 24. He also has a school record 284 career interception return yards and had a string of seven consecutive games with pick during the 2002 season.

The Jim Thorpe Association will select three finalists Nov. 25. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show, broadcast from Disney World on Dec. 11. Formal presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City in February, 2004.
