OJAI, Calif. - The Washington State women's tennis team grabbed two singles wins at the 105th Ojai Valley Tournament Thursday. Coming out strong for the Cougars was Amy Toth in the Invitational and No. 51 Ekaterina Burduli in the Championships.
Burduli posted triumph number 15 on the season by sailing past Washington's Saskia Nauenberg 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. In the round of 16, Burduli lost her steam and fell to No. 46 Whitney Deason of Stanford 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Toth enjoyed a first round bye to and met Stanford's Kara Guzman in the round of 16. The Cougar sophomore captured her 20th win on the season by defeating Guzman 7-5, 6-3. Toth will face Tiffany Lee of Cal in the quarterfinals Friday at noon.
The rest of the Cougar squad had a rough day of competition. Orsolya Sallai was knocked off by No. 48 Daria Panova of Oregon 6-3, 6-3 while Chris Martinez was defeated by Cal's No. 94 Cristina Visico 6-1, 6-2. Both Cougars will compete in the consolation round beginning Friday. Aleksandra Stefanova and Nora Gaal will also be competing in the consolation bracket after first and second round losses respectively. Stefanova was undone by Arizona's Kasia Jakowlew 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, while Gaal received a first round bye and then fell to Ester Bak of Oregon in the round of 16 7-6(2), 6-4.
Doubles play will also begin Friday. In the Championship Burduli/Gaal will meet No. 24 Lauren Colalillo/Kady Pooler of Arizona State at 9 a.m. Sallai/Martinez will take on Stanford's Alica Barnes/Anne Yelsey also beginning at 9 a.m. In Invitational doubles Toth/Stefanova received a first round bye and are slated to face Marion Ravelojaona/Visico of Cal with a match time of 3 p.m.
