Thornton Bests School Record At Silver State Invite Indoor Meet

RENO, Nev. -- Andrea Thornton bettered her NCAA provisional qualifying mark and school record in the women's 20# weight at the Silver State Invitational Indoor Track & Field Meet at the Reno Livestock Events Center Saturday.

Thornton, a junior from Shelton, Wash., tossed the indoor specialty 20# weight 61-feet, 4 1/4 inches, to win the event and better her WSU record by two feet. Teammate Becky Potter (Gig Harbor, Wash.) finished second in the event with an NCAA PQ mark of 60-0 1/4. Thornton also threw a personal-best of 48-4 3/4 for fifth in the shot put.

Jeannette Martus (junior, Livonia, Mich.) placed tenth in the women's pole vault but cleared an NCAA PQ and bettered her school record to 11-11 3/4. Sophomore All-American Whitney Evans (Calgary, Canada) won the high jump with an NCAA PQ of 5-10 3/4.

Agneta Rosenblad (junior, Sweden) won the long jump with a season-best 19-3 1/2, and finished third in the women's 55m hurdles with a time of 8.05 although she ran an 8.01 in the preliminaries. Cicely Clinkenbeard (junior, Okanogan, Wash.) finished second in her triple jump debut this season at 40-10 1/4.

Alishia Booterbaugh (senior, LaCenter, Wash.) finished second in the 800m (2:13.43) and junior Megan Maynard (Langley, Wash.) was second in the 3,000m in a time of 10:23.03.

Junior All-American hurdler, Arend Watkins (San Jose, Calif.), won the men's 55m hurdles in 7.51 seconds and Eric Dudley (Bellingham, Wash.) was fourth at 7.99. Anson Henry (sophomore, Pickering, Ont., Canada) was third in the men's 55m dash in 6.30. Guillermo Macias (senior, LaPuente, Calif.) placed fourth in the 200m dash in a time of 21.99 with Dudley seventh at 22.56.

Ian Waltz, a senior All-American from Post Falls, won the shot put with a throw of 59-3 1/2, and B.J. Schade (senior, Sequim) was third in the 35# weight throw at 59-2.

In the men's pole vault, freshman Rick Collins (West Valley High, Spokane) cleared 16-6 3/4 for 10th place.

Simon Kamau (sophomore, Kenya) placed third in the men's 800m at 1:58.03. In the mile, Scott Johnson (sophomore, Bellevue) was third (4:20.43) and Jonathan Welsh (sophomore, Carmichael, Calif.) was fourth (4:21.36).

The WSU track and field teams will compete at the Moscow McDonald's Indoor Meet Saturday, Feb. 5 at the University of Idaho's Kibbie Dome.
