Vasilieva Leads Cougars Past Miami, 5-2

LINCOLN, Neb. - Washington State University junior Liudmila Vasilieva extended her win streak to 15 as the Cougars defeated Miami (Ohio), 5-2, Saturday morning at the Nebraska Tennis Center.

For the first time in the past three matches, the Cougars (8-2) captured the opening doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Vasilieva and Andjela Kankaras cruised to an 8-2 win over Stephanie Danesis and Nimisha Mohan at No. 1. Elisabeth Fournier and Charlotte Koning defeated Riekie Honiball and Christiana Raymond, 8-4, at No. 2 while Elizaveta Luzina and Olga Musilovich closed out doubles with an 8-7 (7-2) win over Jessica Parr and Christine Guerrazzi at No. 3.

In singles play Vasilieva had little trouble with Honiball at No. 1 singles, posting a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The win was Vasilieva's 15th straight and improved her season record to 23-1, the second-best start to a season in school history. Miami cut the lead to 2-1 when Danesis recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kankaras at No. 3.

Junior Ksenia Googe gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead when she defeated Alix Thurman, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 while Koning clinched the team victory with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 win over Guerrazzi at No. 6.

Fourier improved her dual-match record to 9-1 this season with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Mohan at No. 2. At No. 4 Luzina saw her win streak snapped at 10 as she dropped a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 decision against Raymond.

The Cougars return home to host Brigham Young University Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Match time is set for noon.
