PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's basketball team opens the exhibition portion of its 2008-09 season against Showtime Basketball Sunday (Nov. 2) at Friel Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
WSU loses only one player from its roster at the end of last season, and returns five players that started 20-or-more games in 2007-08: senior guard Katie Appleton, sophomore forward Katie Calderwood, sophomore guard Jasmine Williams, sophomore guard Kezia Kelly and senior forward Heather Molzen.
Appleton was named All-Pacific-10 Conference honorable mention last season, after averaging 12.0 points per game in 2007-08, a mark that ranked 12th in the conference. Kelly was named Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention after starting 25 games. She led the Cougars with 66 assists on the season.
The Cougars also welcome seven freshmen to the program this year, a group that ranked as high as No. 16 (Blue Star Basketball) among the nation's top recruiting classes, and the second-highest among Pac-10 schools. HoopGurlz.com tabbed the recruiting class at No. 24. Each of the freshmen were McDonald's All-America nominees, and two led their prep squad to state championship titles.
The Cougars will host their final exhibition game against Concordia (Ore.), Nov. 9 at 3 p.m., before opening the regular season on the road against Texas Tech, Nov. 16 at noon.
