Cougars Open Outdoor Track Season at Berkeley Quad Meet

EARLY PAC-10 COMPETITION ON TAP FOR COUGAR TRACK & FIELD: The outdoor season begins this weekend for the Washington State track and field teams as the Cougars travel to Berkeley, Calif., where host California entertains UCLA, Washington and WSU in a quad meet Saturday, March 17, at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field on the Cal campus...the UCLA women's team enters the outdoor season as the NCAA Indoor Champions, having won the title last weekend at Fayetteville, Ark...the Cal Quad Meet will be scored four ways (9-7-6-5-4-4-2-1 individual events, 9-7-6-5 relays) and as double-duals (5-3-1 individual events, 5-0 relays)...field events start at 9:30 a.m. with the first running event set for 12:30 p.m.

SLOAN NAMED USTCA WEST REGION MEN'S COACH OF THE YEAR: WSU head coach Rick Sloan was named the United States Track Coaches Association Men's West Region Coach of the Year...this honor comes after Sloan was named the 2001 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Coach of the Year...for the past three years, Sloan has won the MPSF Coach of the Year honors for the women's program...he last won the MPSF men's award in 1999.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 28th season with the Cougar track program (seventh year as a head coach, sixth year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan was named District VIII Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000...he is joined by associate coach Debra Lombardi Farwell, assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Sewell...WSU's volunteer assistant coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.

RETURNING NCAA OUTDOOR PARTICIPANTS: The Cougars' rosters show six women and one man competing this year with NCAA Outdoor Championship experience...the lone male is All-American hurdler Arend Watkins...on the women's side, All-Americans Cicely Clinkenbeard (triple jump), Whitney Evans (high jump and heptathlon), and Ellannee Richardson (heptathlon) lead the way...Agneta Rosenblad (long jump). Randi Smith (intermediate hurdles), and Andrea Thornton (hammer) also have NCAA competitive experience.

FASTER, HIGHER, FARTHER - NEW INDOOR MARKS SET THIS SEASON: The freshmen get better every year and proof comes this year in the form of 11 freshman records being addition, four school records fell by the wayside...the talented Erin Reed lays claim to four rookie records.

NEXT WEEK: Seeking the sun, the WSU track and field teams will compete at the Baldy Castillo Invitational, at the Sun Angel Stadium on the Arizona State campus, Tempe, Arizona...a multi-events (heptathlon, decathlon) competition will take place Thursday and Friday, March 22-23, while the invitational meet occurs Friday and Saturday, March 23-24.
