Cougar Tennis Jolts Montana State, Gonzaga

The No. 64 Washington State women's tennis team swept its doubleheader against Montana State and Gonzaga Saturday. The Cougars (9-10, 0-4 Pac-10) downed Montana State in Pullman 7-0 and went on to play Gonzaga at the Lewis-Clark State College Indoor Tennis Center in Lewiston, Idaho due to inclement weather and defeated the Bulldogs 6-1.

The Cougars faltered in only one singles match and in two doubles matches on the day. With the two team triumphs the Cougars have nearly doubled their win total of five from 2003-04.

Playing at No. 1 singles in both matches No. 52 Ekaterina Burduli dominated. Against Montana State the freshman shut down Nuria Lozano 6-0, 6-0 and went on to put out Gonzaga's Angela Fry 6-1, 6-2. Burduli leads all Cougars since dual match play began with 13 singles victories. Orsolya Sallai also recorded two victories on the day by handing a loss to Vera Vasileva of Montana State 6-3, 6-2 and later putting down Bulldog Amanda Becker 6-3, 6-3. Fellow senior Chris Martinez swept her competition at No. 3 singles, against Montana State she knocked off Ivette Duran 6-0, 6-1 and defeated Gonzaga's Kendall Bates 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Amy Toth isn't too far behind Burduli with dual match singles victories, Toth grabbed one win to give her 12 since dual match play began. Toth soared past Gonzaga's Sirrah Williams 6-0, 6-3 to grab win number 18 on the season.

Sallai and freshman Aleksandra Stefanova were the two Cougar players who won both of their singles and doubles matches. Stefanova , at the No. 5 position, defeated Montana State's Allison Fey 6-1, 6-2 and moved on to knock off Erin Humphrey of Gonzaga 6-2, 6-2.

Fellow freshman Kara Konomos went 1-1 on the day, she posted a victory against Bobcat Laura Richert 6-1, 6-2 and then was put down by Sydney Lederhouse of Gonzaga 6-2, 6-1.

The Cougar freshman combined to go 5-1 in singles competition at the 1, 5 and 6 spots, respectively.

"I'm proud of the confidence and composure we had in our matches today," Washington State head coach Lisa Hart said. "We are looking forward to preparing for our remaining conference matches these next couple of weeks."

The Cougars are back on the court Friday, April 8 at 1:30 p.m. against Arizona State in Tempe.
