SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore Eileen Maes scored with 59 seconds left in the second overtime and Washington State defeated host Gonzaga 2-1, Thursday in nonconference women's soccer.

The game-winner was the fourth goal of the season for the Oakland, Calif., native. After a scramble in front of the goal, Gonzaga (4-3-0) goalkeeper Susan Brown was out of the box and Maes used her knee to flick the ball over Brown and into the empty net setting off a team celebration by the Cougars (5-2-1).

"We created opportunities and we had a tough day in front of the goal," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "But at the end of the day the result is we found a way to win and that is what matters."

Washington State held a 27-13 advantage in corner kicks and earned 12 corner kicks to Gonzaga's four. The Cougars took all seven shots in the overtime periods.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when Emily Hutchins scored off a set piece. Washington State notched the equalizer in the 52nd minute on the first-career goal by freshman Jocelyn Jeffers.

Junior Brandi Vega played a through ball to Jeffers on the right side. Jeffers dribbled past a Gonzaga defender and ripped a shot from 20 yards outs inside the near post.

Cougars will play at Idaho, Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
