Final Stats

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Despite a late charge by Washington State and 16 points from sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge, the Cougars were unable to knock off Long Beach State Friday, falling 61-55 at the Walter Pyramid. WSU completed its nonconference schedule with a mark of 3-8. The 49ers improved to 2-8 on the season.

The 49ers went into halftime with a two-point lead (24-22) and extended that lead to 10 points as it took WSU nearly six minutes to score its first second-half basket. Long Beach State built a 13-point lead at the 12 minute, 15 second mark. However, a 3-pointer from freshman guard Jasmine Williams followed by two 3-point baskets from Betteridge gave WSU a 9-0 run and got the Cougars back to within one point. An 11-4 run gave the 49ers an eight-point lead with 50 seconds left and cemented the win for Long Beach State.

"It's good to see that there was no quit in our team," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "Long Beach did a great job of being in our face all night long, but we need to do a better job of getting our inside game going to open it up on the outside."

Betteridge's 16 points tied her career high she set against UCLA last season (Dec. 29, 2006). She finished the night with four 3-point field goals, also a career high. Freshman guard Jasmine Williams pulled down a career-high seven rebounds to lead the Cougars.

Junior guard Katie Appleton's 3-pointer placed her in a tie for 10th on the Cougars' all-time career list. Appleton now has 87 career 3-pointers. The Pacific-10 Conference leader in steals, Appleton recorded four more against Long Beach State.

The Cougars begin Pac-10 play next week, hitting the road against to face Stanford (Dec. 28) and California (Dec. 30).
