PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's swim team couldn't keep up with Pacific, falling 150-111 in a hard-fought dual meet Saturday.

Despite winning just three of the 14 events, the Cougars stayed with Pacific the entire meet. Two of the three victories for WSU came in breaststroke events where the Cougs finished in the top three in each of the events.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, freshman, Monika Povilonyte (Klaipeda, Lithuania) captured first place in a time of 1:05.48. She was followed by sophomores Jane Copland (Wellington, New Zealand) in second, and Lesley Ouellette (Ukiah, Calif.) in third.

Copland finished first in the 200 yard breastroke (2:20.89), followed by Povilonyte in second (2:22.04), and freshman Kayli Changstrom (Loveland, Colo.) in third with a time of 2:27.00.

"I was excited about the way we stepped up as a team, "WSU Head Coach Erica Quam said. "We're finding ways to keep ourselves in races and make it exciting in the finishes."

The Cougars tried to pull closer to the Tigers in event 13, the 400 individual medley. However, an apparent one-three finish for WSU was taken away by a disqualification of the first place finisher.

"Changstrom had an awesome finish in the IM," Quam said. "To see her touch first was exciting. Unfortunately she got disqualified in the race, but we'll work on that."

Ouellette grabbed the other first place finish for the Cougars in the 100 freestyle (53.59). Freshman Erin McCleave (Rutherglen, Australia), followed behind, in second (53.60).

The Pacific "A" relay team set a Gibb Pool record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.38. The 800 freestyle relay squad broke the record in the relay meet Friday.

The Cougs fell to the Tigers Friday night in a relay meet, 206-196, in another close competition.

Washington State continues a six meet homestand next weekend against the University of Nevada - Reno. The Cougs take on the Wolfpack, Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. in Gibb Pool.

"Nevada's a great team," Quam said. "They're going to come in ready to go and I think we're going to be ready for the challenge. We match up very well, hopefully we can make it exciting."
