Terre Haute, Ind. - The Washington State men's team finished 20th in the White section race and the Cougar women finished 22nd in the Blue section race at the NCAA Pre-National Cross Country Meet Saturday, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at Terre Haute, Ind.

Cougar sophomore Haley Paul (Phoenix) had an outstanding day, finishing the 6,000m women's Blue race in 21st place with a time of 20-minutes, 47 seconds. The race was a tremendous improvement for Paul after placing 112th at last year's Pre-Nationals race.

Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake said Paul performed well in her first real test of the season. "Top 20 was very reasonable for Haley," Drake said. "She had a good day out there, and the rest of our pack ran a pretty solid race."

Also scoring for the women's team were redshirt freshman Meghan Leonard in 100th place (21:58), juniors Kelly Ramirez (104th, 22:02) and Kayle Peterson (122nd, 22:17), and sophomore Isley Gonzalez (178th, 22:53). Freshman Marisa Sandoval (190th) and sophomore Collier Lawrence (201st) also competed for the Cougar women. The team placed 22nd out of 35 teams in the women's Blue race.

Redshirt freshman Woody Favinger was the top Cougar finisher in the men's White race, placing 64th overall with a time of 24:48 on the 8,000 meter course. Redshirt freshman Drew Polley (86th, 25:02), redshirt junior Ryan Freimuth (87th, 25:04), redshirt sophomore Chris Concha (134th, 25:32) and frehsman Sam Ahlbeck (150th, 25:37) all scored for WSU. The men finished 20th overall in the White section field of 34 teams.

"I'm very excited for Woody (Favinger), Ryan (Freimuth) and Drew (Polley); they all placed a lot higher than they have in the past." Drake said. "Our top six men ran very well and exceeded our expectations."

The Pre-Nationals featured 75 men's teams and 78 women's teams, divided into two seeded heats determined by the NCAA Cross Country Sub-Committee. The Blue and White heat races had the top-ranked programs divided equally among them to ensure top competition in each race.

Stanford won the men's team title in the Blue race with Josh Rohatinsky of BYU (23:30) taking the individual title. Josh Mcdougal of Liberty (23:12) won the men's White race, with Colorado capturing the team title.

Stanford also won the women's Blue race while Butler's Victoria Mitchell (20:01) took the individual win. Michigan won the women's White race as Colorado's Christine Bolf was the individual winner (20:12).

A second group of Cougar runners traveled to Cheney, Wash., Saturday to compete in the Eastern Washington University Cross Country Invitational. The WSU women ran a full "B" squad in the 5,000m race and finished fourth overall as a team. Scoring for the Cougar women were juniors Karen DeMartini (25th) and Katie Troy (28th), freshman Kristi Jensen (30th), sophomore Eileen Morley (32nd) and junior Kelli Dahlquist (36th). On the men's side, three Cougars competed in the 8,000m race, with freshman Dan Lucero taking 14th place overall with a time of 27:14. Freshmen Dominic Smargiassi and Josh Brown (both unattached), finished (28th) and (42nd) respectively. WSU did not run a full team in the men's race and did not score in the team competition.

The Cougars will use the next two weeks to train for the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Oct. 29, at Tucson, Arizona.
