LOS ANGELES - Washington State's Candace Fields scored a season-high 16 points and Stephanie Singer added 11 in the Cougars' 78-58 loss to the UCLA Bruins in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action Friday at Pauley Pavilion.

The loss dropped the Cougars to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in the Pac-10 while UCLA improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

"I was real pleased with Candace's performance; she did a good job," WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. "She attacked like we asked her."

UCLA, which shot a blistering 34-of-62 (54.8 percent) from the field, bolted out of the gates, jumping out to an 18-3 lead. The Bruins were 9-of-18 from the field in the game's first nine minutes while WSU was 2-of-8 during the same duration.

Down 26-14, WSU rallied, going on a 7-0 run to pull within five at 26-21 with 6:36 remaining. After seeing its lead shrink, UCLA re-established a double digit advantage with a 9-0 run to go ahead 37-23 at the 2:15 mark. The Bruins would head into halftime with a 41-28 lead.

UCLA quickly erased any doubt as to the outcome with a 16-0 run to begin the second half to go ahead 57-28.

Once again, turnovers plagued WSU as the Cougars committed 27 turnovers, marking the second straight game the team reached that figure.

"We have to play defense," Murrell said. "Our defense and our turnovers are just going to kill this team. We scored some points tonight. We have been since we started Pac-10 play but those two things that killed us last year are still killing us right now."

The game marked the conclusion of what was a long day for the Cougars. The team did not arrive in Los Angeles until 10:30 a.m. of game day. WSU was supposed to arrive in L.A. Thursday night but was forced to stay overnight in Spokane as flight delays prevented the team from flying to California.

WSU return to action at USC, Sunday, Jan. 11 for a 2 p.m. Pacific Time tip-off.
